Growing up in a small yet bustling New England town full of mom & pop shops of the 50's & early 60's,  Harlan, his brothers, and his friends played 45s & LPs, reel to reel, eight track & cassette tapes, and listened to a whole lot of radio as a main source of entertainment & education. They all took some kind of  music lessons on one instrument or another... some stuck it out with a passion and became professional musicians. Others continued to play just for the fun of it.

Music magazines such as Downbeat, Hit Parader, Rolling Stone, Eye, Creem and others were devoured, records were bought unheard, and bragging rights established for the new discovery. Sometimes, on especially miserable New England winter evenings, passionate discussions on the merits of bands & record releases were exchanged, as well as a few record collections,  over a game of pool.

The idea for the store grew out of an obsessive hobby with listening to, then collecting records, and a yearning for the mom & pop music stores of his childhood...the records, sheet music, instruments & accessories, and the old guy who taught music lessons in the basement.
